Discover which common preservatives to steer clear of and where they lurk.
Artificial preservatives are designed to prolong shelf life, but many can pose health risks. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, some preservatives, like BHA and BHT, may be linked to cancer in animal studies.
Sodium nitrite, often found in processed meats, can form carcinogenic compounds when cooked at high temperatures. The World Health Organization lists processed meats as a Group 1 carcinogen, highlighting the dangers of consuming them regularly.
Other additives, like propyl gallate and potassium bromate, can also be problematic. Propyl gallate is often used in fats and oils, while potassium bromate is a flour enhancer that has been banned in many countries due to its potential health risks.
To minimize your exposure, read food labels carefully. Focus on whole foods and opt for products with fewer ingredients or those labeled 'preservative-free' whenever possible.
